How to Fix a Sideways or Upside-Down Scanned PDF

Why do scanned pages end up sideways?
Scanning apps and office scanners feed paper in different ways. If a page goes into the scanner turned, or the phone was held in landscape mode when you photographed it, the picture is saved that way.
Some scanners also add a small flag to the page that says “show me rotated by 90 degrees”. Different programs treat that flag differently. That is why a PDF can look right in one viewer and wrong in another.
Whatever the cause, the cure is the same: turn the pages and save a new copy.
Fixing the whole document
- Open the Rotate PDF tool.
- Tap the box and choose your PDF.
- You will see a small preview of every page.
- Tap Right to turn every page a quarter turn clockwise, or Left to turn them anticlockwise.
- Check the previews. Tap again if you need a half turn.
- Tap Save rotated PDF and then Download.
Upside-down pages need two taps, since two quarter turns make a half turn.
Fixing only some pages
Mixed documents are common: most pages are fine but a few were scanned sideways.
Under each preview you will see two small buttons, one for turning that page left and one for turning it right. Tap them on only the pages that need it. The preview updates as you go, so you can see the result before you save.
If you make a mistake, tap Reset to put every page back as it was, and start again.
Checking your work
Before you download, look at each preview and ask:
- Is the text horizontal and readable?
- Is the top of the page at the top?
- Are there any pages I missed?
After you save, open the new PDF in your usual viewer too. If it looks right there, you are done.
Does rotating reduce quality?
No. The tool does not redraw the page. It changes how the page is displayed. The text, pictures and lines are untouched, so you do not lose sharpness and the file size stays almost the same.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The preview and the saving both run in your browser. Your scans may contain private information, and they stay on your device.
Photos that are sideways
If your pages come from photos, the problem may be in the photos and not the PDF. Why might the preview look different from my viewer?
The preview respects the rotation already stored in the PDF. If a viewer ignores that flag, it shows the page differently. When in doubt, trust the preview in the tool and check the final file in two viewers, such as your browser and a PDF app.
Common questions
Can I rotate by a small angle, like 5 degrees? No. PDF page rotation works in quarter turns. If your scan is slightly crooked, rescan the page and hold the camera straight above it. Many camera apps have a document mode that corrects this.
Will it work on a large scan with hundreds of pages? Yes, but the previews load as you scroll, so a long file takes a little longer on a phone. Rotate all pages at once with the Left or Right buttons to save time.
What if the PDF has a password? Remove the password in the app that made it, then try again. A browser tool cannot open protected files.
