How to Compress a PDF to 50 KB for Online Forms

· 4 min read

Some forms accept only a 50 KB PDF. Here is how to prepare the pages, use the 50 KB target, and what to do when a page will not shrink that far.

Free tool for this guide Compress PDF → Make PDF files smaller for forms and email.

To compress a PDF to 50 KB, keep only the pages you must send, then choose the “Under 50 KB” target in the Compress PDF tool. The tool turns the pages into small pictures until the file fits, or tells you the smallest size it could reach.

50 KB is very small. One or two pages usually fit. A long document with photos usually does not, so it helps to prepare the file first.

What you need

  • The PDF, or the photo of the document, on your phone
  • A note of the exact limit the form shows. Some forms say 50 KB, some say 100 KB for documents and 50 KB for photos or signatures.
  • A few minutes

Steps to get a PDF under 50 KB

  1. Look at your PDF and decide which pages the form really needs. If it needs only page 1 and 2, use Split PDF first and save only those pages.
  2. If the pages have wide empty margins, trim them with Crop PDF. The picture then holds less empty space.
  3. Open the Compress PDF tool, tap the box and choose your PDF.
  4. Under How much to compress, pick Strong. At 50 KB the tool will need its strongest settings anyway, so starting there saves time.
  5. Under Target size (optional), choose Under 50 KB, then tap Compress PDF.
  6. Read the result message. If it says the file is under 50 KB, download it. If it says it could not reach 50 KB, note the smallest size it shows and read the next section.
  7. Open the downloaded file and zoom in. Check that names, dates and numbers can still be read.

What 50 KB means for your pages

At this size, each page is stored as a small, low-detail picture. That is the only way a page can get so small. The page will look the same at arm’s length, and big text stays readable. Small print may look soft.

Because the pages are pictures, you cannot select or copy the text afterwards. If you may need the text again, keep the original PDF.

A scan of a typed page in black and white is the easiest case. A colour photo of a page with a patterned background is the hardest, because the picture holds much more detail.

If the file stays over 50 KB

Try one of these changes, then compress again:

  • Fewer pages. Each page adds to the size. Send two pages instead of five if the form allows it.
  • A clearer, simpler scan. If you can scan the document again, use a plain white background and good light. Plain pages compress far better than shadowed or wrinkled ones. Our guide to scanning with your phone explains how.
  • An image instead of a PDF. Some forms accept a JPG for documents as well. A single JPG can be made under 50 KB with Compress Image, using the Under 50 KB target. Check what file types the form accepts first.
  • Ask for another way. If a document cannot be made readable at 50 KB, the form may allow another size or an email. It is better to ask than to send something nobody can read.

Do not trust the number blindly

Websites measure size in slightly different ways, and a few count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. The target here uses 1,024 bytes per KB. If the website rejects a file that shows a size close to 50 KB on your phone, compress it to a smaller target and try again.

Also check that the form really asks for a PDF. Some ask for “a scanned copy” and accept a PDF or a JPG, and the limit is sometimes different for each.

Common problems

It says it could not reach 50 KB. Use fewer pages or a simpler scan. The tool gives you the smallest file it made, but a file over the limit will not be accepted.

The text is too blurry to read. The tool had to cut the detail to reach 50 KB. Try one page at a time, or crop away empty margins first.

The website still says the file is too large. Compare the size shown on your phone with the size the website reports. They may differ slightly. Aim a little lower.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 50 KB PDF readable?

Often, yes, for one or two pages of plain text. Large text and clear typed lines stay readable. Small print, stamps and handwriting may look soft, so check the result at full zoom before you upload it.

Can I compress a 5 MB PDF to 50 KB?

Only if it has very few pages or little detail. A 5 MB file usually holds several photographs or scans. The tool tries its strongest settings and shows what it reached. Sending fewer pages is the most reliable fix.

Will the text be selectable afterwards?

No. At this size, the pages become pictures, so the text cannot be selected, copied or searched. Keep your original file for that.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your file is never sent anywhere.
