Remove the background from a photo
Cut out the person, product or pet in a photo and save it with a see-through background, or on white or a colour you choose.
Files never leave your device
Choose the photo to cut out.
Before you start
The first time, this tool downloads a small AI model (4.4 MB) and the program that runs it (13.6 MB): about 18 MB in total, less if your connection compresses it. They are saved on your device, so next time it starts straight away. Your photo is never uploaded.
- Works best with one clear subject: a person, a product or a pet, on a background that differs from it.
- Fine hair, fur, glass and busy backgrounds can look rough. Always check the edges.
- Big photos are shrunk a little first, so they fit in your phone's memory.
Working…

How to use it
- Step 1: Tap the box and choose a photo. The tool tells you how much it will download the first time.
- Step 2: Tap Remove background. The AI model is downloaded once, then runs on your device.
- Step 3: Slide to compare before and after, pick see-through, white or a colour, and download the picture.
Your files never leave your device
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so your documents and photos stay private. It is free, has no watermark and needs no sign-up.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your own device. Your photo never goes to our servers or anyone else.
Why does it download something the first time?
The cutting out is done by a small AI model and the program that runs it, about 18 MB together (less if your connection compresses it). The size is shown before anything is downloaded. They are saved on your device, so later cut-outs start straight away and also work without internet.
How good is the result?
It works best on one clear subject, such as a person, a product or a pet, that stands out from the background. Fine hair, fur, glass, shadows and busy backgrounds can look rough, and the model works at a modest detail level, so check the edges. It is meant for everyday uses, not studio work.
What can I save the picture as?
A PNG. With the see-through option the background is transparent, so you can place the subject on other pictures. Choose white or your own colour to fill the background instead, which is useful for ID-style or shop photos.
What if my phone is slow or runs out of memory?
Large photos are shrunk before they are processed, more on phones that report little memory, and the tool tells you when it did. If it still fails, it asks you to close other tabs or choose a smaller photo.
Which licences does it use?
The model is U²-Net-P (Apache-2.0) and the program that runs it is ONNX Runtime Web (MIT). Both are listed on the licences page, and both may be used commercially.
