Frequently asked questions

How small can my video get?

It depends on how long the video is. A short clip can become very small and still look good. A long video squeezed into a few megabytes will look blocky, and the page warns you when the aim is too low. The page shows the original size and the expected size before you start, and the real size when it finishes.

What do the presets do?

Small for WhatsApp makes the picture 480p with light sound and aims for a small file. For email aims for a file that leaves room under common attachment limits. Good quality keeps 720p with better sound. My own size lets you type the size in MB. WhatsApp sets its own limits, which differ between app versions and connections, so check what your WhatsApp allows. Gmail Help says a personal account can attach up to 25 MB in total.

Which videos and phones work?

MP4, MOV from an iPhone, M4V, 3GP and WebM. Your browser must support WebCodecs: recent Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet and Safari on iPhone do. Some iPhone videos use HEVC (H.265), which some Android browsers cannot read. In that case the page tells you before anything starts.

Will the video stay upright and keep its sound?

Yes. A phone video filmed upright stays upright. The sound is kept unless you turn it off. The result is an MP4 with H.264 picture and AAC sound, which plays almost everywhere. If your browser cannot make H.264, the page says so and saves a WebM instead.

How long does it take, and can I stop it?

It depends on your phone and the video. The page shows the time left and has a Cancel button. Keep the tab open and the screen on; the page asks your phone to keep the screen awake while it works. Very long or very big videos are better done on a computer.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and compressed inside your browser, on your device. It never goes to our servers or anyone else.
