Frequently asked questions
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 60 seconds, but about 15 seconds or less works best. A GIF stores every frame as a picture, so the file grows fast with length, width and frame rate. The page shows an estimate before you start and the real size when it is done.
Why is my GIF so big?
GIF is an old format that compresses motion poorly. A 10 second clip can be many megabytes. Lower the frame rate, the width or the length. If the GIF is for a chat app, a short video file is usually much smaller, and you can make one with Compress Video.
What frame rate and width should I choose?
10 frames per second and 320 pixels wide is a good start: it is smooth enough for most clips and small. Use 15 frames per second for fast action, and 5 to save space. 480 or 640 pixels wide looks sharper and makes a bigger file. The GIF is never made wider than the video.
Does the GIF keep its colours?
A GIF can show only 256 colours, so smooth gradients and photos look a little rougher than the video. The tool picks the 256 colours that suit your clip best, using samples from all the chosen frames.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in a recent Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet or Safari. The page tells you when your browser cannot read the video. It decodes the part twice, so long clips take a while; keep the tab open.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The GIF is made inside your browser, on your device. The video never goes to our servers or anyone else.
