How to use the file as a ringtone
Android
- Save the MP3 to your phone.
- Open it in the Files app and use the menu to choose Set as ringtone. You may need to allow the app to change system settings. Google describes this in the Files by Google help.
- Another way: connect the phone to a computer with a cable and copy the MP3 into the phone's Ringtones folder. Then choose it in Settings, under Sound and vibration, then Ringtone.
Menus differ between phone makers, so the names may be a little different on yours.
iPhone
- Save the M4A to your iPhone, in the Files app.
- Open the free GarageBand app, start a new audio recording project, and open the Tracks view and the Loops browser. Under Files, choose Browse items from the Files app and pick your file.
- Drag the file to the far left of the track. Ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long.
- Go to My Songs, tap Share, then Ringtone, give it a name and tap Export. Then choose Use sound as and pick Standard Ringtone.
These are Apple's own steps: see Create a custom ringtone on your iPhone.

Frequently asked questions
Which files can I cut?
MP3, M4A and AAC, WAV, OGG and OPUS (including WhatsApp voice notes), FLAC, WebM, and the sound of MP4 and MOV videos. If your browser cannot read a format, the page says so before you start. AMR, a very old phone recording format, is not supported.
How do I make a ringtone?
Pick the part you want, choose the Android or iPhone ringtone, and save. Android phones play an MP3 as a ringtone. For an iPhone the tool makes an M4A of 30 seconds or less, which you then add with the GarageBand app: the steps are on this page. Only use audio you have the right to use.
Does cutting lose quality?
The part you keep is decoded and saved again, so MP3 and M4A are compressed one more time. Choose WAV for no further loss, or a higher bit rate such as 192 or 256 kbps for MP3 and M4A. Your original file is never changed.
What do the fades do?
A fade in raises the volume from silence at the start, and a fade out lowers it to silence at the end, so a cut does not end with a click or a jump. They are simple straight-line fades, from 1 to 5 seconds.
Can I cut a long file on my phone?
Yes. Most formats are decoded in small pieces, so a long file does not fill the memory. A few formats, such as FLAC, have to be opened in one piece, and the page warns you for long ones. Keep the tab open while it works.
Is my sound file uploaded?
No. The sound is read and cut inside your browser, on your device. It never goes to our servers or anyone else.
