Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Fast and Exact?

Fast copies the video without re-encoding it, so it takes seconds and the quality does not change. A video can only start cleanly at a key frame, so the cut may begin up to a second or two before the time you chose, and the page shows the exact start. Exact decodes and encodes the picture again, so it starts on the frame you chose, but it takes longer and the picture is compressed once more.

Why did my fast cut start earlier than I set?

Videos store full pictures only at key frames, often once a second on phones. The frames between them depend on the earlier ones, so a copy without re-encoding must begin at a key frame. Use Exact if the start must be on a precise frame.

Does it keep the sound and the portrait shape?

Yes. The sound is cut at the same time as the picture, and a video filmed upright stays upright.

Which videos and phones work?

MP4, MOV from an iPhone, M4V, 3GP and WebM in a recent Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet or Safari. Fast mode only copies data, so it works even for videos your browser cannot play, such as some HEVC iPhone videos. Exact mode and the preview need the browser to be able to read the video.

How long can the video be?

There is no fixed limit, but phones have little memory. The page warns above 500 MB or 10 minutes. Fast mode is the safest choice for big files.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and cut inside your browser, on your device. It never goes to our servers or anyone else.
