How to Remove a Photo Background on Your Phone
· 3 min read
Cut out a person or product from a photo, keep it see-through or put it on white. Steps for your phone, with an honest look at what works well.
Free tool for this guide Remove Background → Cut out the subject of a photo for a see-through PNG.You have a good photo of a product, a pet or yourself, but the background spoils it. A messy room behind a profile picture, a cluttered table behind something you want to sell. Removing the background used to need an editing app and a lot of patience. Now a small AI model can do the first cut in seconds, right on your phone.
This guide shows how, and it is honest about what the method does well and where it struggles.
What you need
- A photo on your phone, ideally with one clear subject
- A little mobile data or Wi-Fi the first time, for a one-off download
- A minute or two
Why there is a download the first time
The cutting is done by an AI model that runs inside your browser, not on a distant server. That is why your photo never leaves your phone. The model and the small program that runs it come to about 18 MB together, and the tool tells you the size before it downloads anything. After that they are saved on your device, so the next cut-out starts straight away and even works without internet.
Step 1: Choose your photo
Open our Remove Background tool, tap the box and choose a photo from your gallery. HEIC photos from an iPhone work too. Very large photos are made a little smaller first, so your phone does not run out of memory. The tool tells you when it did this.
Step 2: Tap Remove background
Tap the button. On the first use you will see a progress bar for the download, then messages while the subject is found and cut out. On most phones this takes a few seconds once the model is ready.
Step 3: Check the result
You get a before and after view. Drag the slider to compare the original with the result. Zoom in on the edges and check these places:
- Hair and fur: fine strands are the hardest part, so they may look rough or be cut short.
- Shadows: a shadow under a product is sometimes kept as part of the subject.
- Glass and see-through things: a glass or a veil may lose its see-through parts.
- Similar colours: if the subject and the background are close in colour, the cut can be uneven.
If the result is poor, try a photo with better light and a background that differs more from your subject.
Step 4: Pick the background
Under the picture, choose what goes behind the subject:
- See-through keeps the background transparent, so you can put the cut-out on another picture. It is saved as a PNG.
- White is handy for shop listings and forms that want a plain background.
- My colour lets you choose any colour, for example a light blue for an ID-style photo.
The Download button always gives you the picture you see above it.
Step 5: Download and use it
Tap Download. On a phone you can also use the Send it buttons to share the picture straight to a chat. If you need a smaller file, make it lighter with Compress Image, or trim the empty space around the subject with Crop Image.
A word on rules for official photos
Some forms and offices have strict rules for photos, such as the exact background colour, size or head position. This tool changes only the background. Check what the form asks for, and do not assume that a cut-out meets an official rule.
A note on privacy
The model runs on your device. Your photo, the cut-out and the colour you pick stay in your browser and are never sent to us or anyone else. When you close the tab, they are gone.
Try it now
Cut out the person, product or pet in a photo and save it with a see-through background, or on white or a colour you choose. Your files never leave your device.
