How to Fill a PDF Form on Your Phone

· 4 min read

Fill a PDF form on your phone: type in the boxes, tick choices, or write on a scanned form. Includes how to lock your answers before you send it.

Free tool for this guide Fill PDF Form → Type into the boxes of a PDF form, or write on a scanned one.

A form lands in your email or your WhatsApp as a PDF. The old way was to print it, fill it in with a pen, and scan it again. You can skip all of that. A modern phone is good enough to type your answers straight into the file and send it back within a few minutes.

This guide shows how, for both kinds of form you are likely to meet: forms with real fillable boxes, and forms that are only a picture of a page.

What you need

  • The PDF on your phone, in your Downloads folder, your email or your chat app
  • A few minutes
  • The details you need to put in, written down or ready to type

Step 1: Open the Fill PDF Form tool

Open our Fill PDF Form tool, tap the box and choose your PDF. The file stays on your phone. It is not uploaded anywhere, which matters for forms that hold your address, ID numbers or bank details.

Once the file opens, the tool looks for fillable boxes and tells you how many it found.

Step 2: If the form has fillable boxes

Real forms have boxes that you can tap. They show up in blue over the page, and they are also listed in a plain list above the pages. The list has large boxes with clear labels, so it is usually the easier place to type on a small screen. What you type in one place appears in the other.

  • Text boxes: type your answer. Some boxes allow only a certain number of characters, and the list tells you how many.
  • Checkboxes: tap to tick or untick.
  • Round choices: pick one answer. Choosing another clears the first.
  • Dropdowns: open the list and pick an option.

A box that the form maker locked is shown as locked and cannot be changed. That is deliberate, so leave it as it is.

Step 3: If the form has no fillable boxes

Many forms are just a photo or a scan. The tool tells you when it finds no boxes, and you can still fill the page in with Type anywhere on the page.

  1. Type your text, then tap Add text. Or tap Add ✓, Add ✗ or Today’s date.
  2. Tap the page where it should go. If that is hard to do exactly, tap Put it in the middle of the page and drag it into place afterwards.
  3. Drag the item to move it. Drag the round handle at its corner, or pinch with two fingers, to resize it. Tap the red cross to remove it.

Take your time lining the text up with the printed line. Zoom your browser in if the lines are small. You can add as many items as you need, on any page.

Step 4: Hindi, Malayalam, Arabic and other names

If a name or address has to be written in Hindi, Malayalam or Arabic, just type it. The letters inside most PDF forms cannot draw those alphabets, so your browser draws them for you and puts the result into the box. They look right on the page, but they become part of the picture, so they cannot be selected as text afterwards. Other alphabets are planned.

Step 5: Flatten, or keep it editable

Before you save, decide about Flatten the form.

  • Off: the boxes stay fillable. Anyone who opens the saved file can still change the answers, which is handy if you need to come back to it tomorrow.
  • On: your answers become part of the page, like ink on paper. Nobody can change them in the saved file. Choose this when you are sending the form to someone else.

Tap Save filled PDF, then download it or send it straight from the result screen.

Before you send it

Read the saved PDF once from top to bottom. Check names, dates and numbers, because a typing slip in an ID number can mean the form is rejected. If the form also needs your signature, use our Sign PDF tool on the saved file. If it holds personal details, you can lock it with a password using Protect PDF and send the password separately.

If you have to send several documents together, join them first with Merge PDF, so the receiver gets a single file.

A note on privacy

Everything happens inside your browser. The form, the answers you type and the finished PDF never leave your phone, and nothing is stored on our side. When you are done, close the tab, and the data is gone from the page.

Try it now

Type your answers into a PDF form, tick the boxes, or write straight onto a printed or scanned form, then save the finished PDF. Your files never leave your device.
