How to Make a Signature with a Transparent Background
· 5 min read
Photograph your signature, remove the paper colour, and use it on a PDF or as a clean image. Steps for your phone, with honest limits.
Free tool for this guide Sign PDF → Draw or type your signature and add it to a PDF.To make a signature with a transparent background, sign with a dark pen on white paper, take a sharp photo, and add it in the Upload tab of the Sign PDF tool. The tool removes the paper colour, so only the ink is placed on your PDF.
This guide also covers the other common need: a plain signature image with a white background, for forms that ask you to upload a small picture of your signature.
What you need
- A sheet of plain white paper and a dark pen. A black or dark blue pen works best.
- Your phone and good, even light
- The PDF you want to sign, if you are signing a document
Steps to make a signature with a clear background
- Sign your name on plain white paper, large and clear, with a dark pen. Make the lines solid. Thin, pale pencil strokes will not come out well.
- Place the paper on a table in even light, with no shadow across it. Hold the phone straight above the paper and take a sharp photo. Fill most of the frame with the signature.
- If the photo has a lot of paper around the signature, trim it with Crop Image so the signature fills the picture.
- Open the Sign PDF tool, tap the box and choose the PDF you want to sign.
- In the signature box, open the Upload tab and choose the signature photo.
- Keep Remove the white paper background ticked. Move the Background removal slider up if paper marks remain, and down if the pen lines get thin. Check the preview, which sits on a checkered pattern to show what is clear.
- Tap Use this signature, then Add signature to page. Drag the signature into place and resize it with the round corner handle or by pinching.
- Tap Save signed PDF and download it.
What “clear background” means
A signature photo has a background of white or grey paper. A clear (transparent) background means the paper colour is gone, so only the ink shows. When you place such a signature on a page, the text underneath the signature line stays visible, and no white box covers it.
The Sign PDF tool does this for you while you place the signature. It does not save a separate clear-background picture file. If you need a signature as a stand-alone transparent file, you need an image editor that supports transparency. For most uses, placing the signature straight onto the PDF is all you need.
If a form asks for a signature image
Many application forms ask you to upload a picture of your signature. These usually want a plain picture with a white background, a small size in pixels, and a small file size. A clear background is not needed, and some forms do not accept it.
To prepare one:
- Take the photo as described above, and crop it tightly with Crop Image.
- Open Resize Image, choose Common sizes, and pick Signature (140 × 60 px) if that is close to what the form wants. Always check the form’s own instructions, because sizes differ.
- If the form has a file size limit, such as 20 KB or 50 KB, run the result through Compress Image with a target size.
- Look at the final picture. The signature should be readable and not squashed.

An honest note on what this signature is
A signature picture placed on a PDF is a visual mark, not a certified digital signature. Whether it is accepted depends on the person or office asking for it. Some processes need a certified digital signature or an original in ink. Check what is needed. Our guide on signing a PDF on your phone explains the difference.
Keep your signature file private. Anyone who has a picture of your signature could copy it. Share a signed PDF only with people who need it.
Common problems
Paper marks or shadows remain. Move the Background removal slider up a little, or retake the photo in even light on clean white paper.
The pen lines look thin or broken. Move the slider down, or sign again with a thicker, darker pen.
The signature looks small on the page. Drag the round handle at the corner to make it bigger, or pinch with two fingers.
The photo is dark. Take it near a window in daylight, and avoid the flash.
Frequently asked questions
Can I save my signature as a transparent PNG with PaperPDF?
Not as a separate file. The tool removes the paper colour while you place the signature on a PDF. If you need a stand-alone transparent image, use an image editor that supports transparency.
Does the signature have a white box around it?
Not if you keep the background removal ticked. The paper colour is removed, so only the ink is drawn on the page.
Is my signature uploaded anywhere?
No. The photo, the signature and the signed PDF stay in your browser, on your device.
Can I draw my signature instead of using a photo?
Yes. The Draw tab lets you sign with your finger or mouse, and the Type tab makes a signature from your name in a handwriting style.
Is this a legally valid signature?
It adds a picture of your signature. Whether that is accepted depends on the person or office asking for it, so check what they accept.
