WebP is a picture format that many websites use to save data. Some programs, printers and forms cannot open it. JPG works almost everywhere.
What you need
- One or more .webp pictures
- A browser on your phone or computer
- About a minute
Steps to turn WebP into JPG
- Open the WebP to JPG tool, then tap or click the box and choose your WebP files. You can pick many at once.
- Choose the quality. 90 looks the same as the original on a phone screen, and a lower number makes smaller files.
- Tap Convert to JPG and wait for the progress bar.
- Download each picture, or use the ZIP button to get all of them together.
- Open one of the JPG files and check that it looks right.
- Use the JPG for your upload, email or print.
Why do I have a WebP?
Many websites and apps send pictures as WebP, because the files are smaller than JPG and load faster. When you press and hold a picture and save it, you may get the WebP file, even though it looked like an ordinary photo on the page.
You may also find WebP pictures when you download from a chat app or a social site, or when you save a picture from a search result.
What changes when you convert
- Transparent areas become white. A WebP can have a see-through background. A JPG cannot, so the clear parts are filled with white.
- Animation is lost. An animated WebP becomes a still picture, using the first frame.
- The file may get a little bigger or smaller. It depends on the picture and the quality you choose.
- Quality. JPG loses a little detail each time a picture is saved with it. At 90 or above, the difference is hard to see.
If you need to keep a see-through background, convert to PNG instead. The format guide JPG vs PNG vs WebP explains which to choose and why.
Which quality should I choose?
Quality 90 is a safe choice for everyday photos. It keeps the picture looking the same on a phone screen and gives a file that is easy to share. Choose 95 if the picture has fine detail or text that you want very sharp. Choose 75 or 80 if you need a much smaller file and a little softness does not matter.
After converting
- Make it smaller. If a form limits the size, use Compress Image with a target such as 200 KB.
- Change its size in pixels. Use Resize Image if a site asks for exact dimensions. Our guide on reducing photo size for forms shows how.
- Put it in a PDF. Use JPG to PDF to join several pictures into one document.
If your photos are HEIC instead
iPhone photos are often HEIC. They work the same way, with their own tool. See our guide on converting HEIC to JPG on Windows, or use the HEIC to JPG tool.
Common problems
The file will not open after saving. Make sure the download finished. Try saving it again, then convert it.
The background went white and I wanted it clear. JPG has no transparency. Use PNG instead if you need a clear background.
My animated picture stopped moving. JPG cannot animate. If you need to keep the animation, keep the original WebP.
The new picture looks soft. Convert again at a higher quality, such as 95.
