How to Convert HEIC Photos to JPG on Windows

· 4 min read

iPhone photos will not open on your Windows PC? Convert HEIC to JPG in your browser, with no software to install and no upload.

Free tool for this guide HEIC to JPG → Change iPhone HEIC photos to ordinary JPG.

To convert HEIC photos to JPG on Windows, open the HEIC to JPG tool in Edge, Chrome or Firefox, choose your photos, pick a quality and download the JPG files. It works in the browser, so there is nothing to install.

HEIC is the format iPhones use by default. Windows often cannot show it without extra software, and many websites refuse it. A JPG opens almost everywhere.

What you need

  • A Windows PC with a modern browser
  • The HEIC photos copied from your iPhone to the PC. They end in .heic.
  • About two minutes

Steps to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows

  1. Copy the photos from your iPhone to your PC. You can connect the phone with a cable and open it in File Explorer, or send the photos to yourself by email or a cloud folder. Put them in one folder.
  2. Open the HEIC to JPG tool and click the box. You can also drag the photos from File Explorer and drop them on the box.
  3. Select your .heic files. Hold Ctrl and click to pick several, or press Ctrl+A to pick all of them in the folder. Click Open.
  4. The first time, a small converter, about half a megabyte, downloads. It only downloads when a HEIC file is chosen, and it is kept for next time.
  5. Choose a JPG quality. 90 keeps photos looking the same on screen. A lower number makes smaller files.
  6. Click Convert to JPG, then wait for the progress bar.
  7. Download the files one by one, or use the ZIP button to get them all in one file. Open the ZIP, extract the photos, and open one to check it.

Why HEIC photos will not open

HEIC makes a photo file smaller than JPG for the same quality, which is why Apple chose it. But Windows does not always include what it needs to show HEIC pictures, and many programs, printing services and upload forms do not accept it. Converting to JPG solves this for every one of those cases.

The JPG will usually be a larger file than the HEIC, because HEIC is more efficient. If you need a smaller file, use Compress Image on the JPG afterwards.

Stop making HEIC in the first place

If you do not want HEIC photos on your iPhone, you can change a setting. Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay as HEIC, so you still need the tool for those.

Our guide on converting iPhone HEIC photos to JPG covers the phone side in more detail.

Do you want a PDF instead?

If your goal is a PDF, you can skip the JPG step. The HEIC to PDF page turns HEIC photos straight into a PDF.

What happens to the photo information

The conversion draws the picture again as a JPG. Photo details that are stored in the file, such as the place where it was taken, may not carry over. That can be handy for privacy, but do not rely on it. If you share a photo and care about its details, check the file before you send it.

Live Photos are converted to a still picture only. The short movie part is not included.

Common problems

The converter does not download. Check your internet connection. It only needs to download once. After that it is saved in your browser for offline use.

The photos are rotated. The tool reads the rotation stored with the photo and turns it the right way up. If one still looks wrong, open it in Photos, rotate it and save.

The conversion is slow. HEIC photos can be large, and a lot of them take time on an older PC. Try a few at a time.

One photo fails. It may be damaged or not really a HEIC. Try it on its own, or take a new copy from the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything on Windows?

No. The tool runs in your browser. A small converter downloads once, only when a HEIC file is chosen.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The photos are converted inside your browser on your PC. They are never sent to our servers or anyone else.

Will I lose quality?

At quality 90 or higher, a JPG looks the same on a screen. The JPG file will be larger than the HEIC.

Can I convert many photos at once?

Yes. Select them all, convert them together, and download them in a single ZIP.

Does it work offline?

After the first use, yes. The converter is saved in your browser, so you can use the tool without internet.
