How to Merge PDF Files on Windows Without Software

· 4 min read

Combine PDF files on Windows 10 or 11 using only your browser. Nothing to install, no sign-up, and your files are not uploaded.

Free tool for this guide Merge PDF → Join several PDFs into one file.

To merge PDF files on Windows without installing software, open the Merge PDF tool in Edge, Chrome or Firefox, choose your files, put them in order and download the combined PDF. Everything happens in your browser.

Windows has no simple “merge PDF” button in File Explorer, and a PDF reader on its own usually only shows pages. A browser tool fills that gap without installing anything. This guide shows the steps and a few tips for a tidy result.

What you need

  • A Windows PC with a modern browser such as Edge, Chrome or Firefox
  • The PDF files in a folder you can find, such as Downloads or Documents
  • About two minutes

Steps to merge PDFs on Windows

  1. Put the PDFs you want to join in one folder. Give them names that sort in the order you want, such as 1-cover.pdf and 2-report.pdf. This is optional, but it makes the next step easier.
  2. Open the Merge PDF tool in your browser and click the box. You can also drag the files from File Explorer and drop them on the box.
  3. In the window that opens, select two or more PDFs. Hold Ctrl and click to pick several files, or click the first, hold Shift and click the last to pick a range. Click Open.
  4. Check the list. Drag a file up or down to change the order, or use the arrow buttons. The merged PDF follows the list from top to bottom.
  5. Click Merge PDFs and wait for the progress bar to finish.
  6. Click the download button. Edge and Chrome save the file to your Downloads folder, and a prompt at the top of the browser lets you open it right away.
  7. Open the merged file and scroll through it once to check the order and make sure no page is missing.

What the merge does and does not change

Pages are copied as they are. Text stays text, pictures keep their quality, and the layout does not change. The merged file is a new PDF, and your original files are not touched.

Page numbers printed on the original pages are part of those pages, so they do not renumber. If you want fresh numbers across the whole document, add them after merging with Add Page Numbers.

Why use a browser tool

A browser tool avoids installing software you may not need again. It also means you can use any PC, including a work or library computer where you cannot install programs.

Many online PDF sites upload your files to a server. This tool does not. The merge runs inside your browser on your own PC, so your files never leave it. That matters for contracts, bills and ID copies. Our guide Is It Safe to Use Online PDF Tools? explains how to check this for any site.

Tips for a good result

  • Remove pages you do not need first. Use Organize PDF to delete extra pages from a file before you join it. Our guide on deleting pages from a PDF shows how.
  • Keep the size in mind. Merging adds the sizes together. If the merged file is too big to email, compress it afterwards. Start with the gentlest setting, as explained in our guide to reducing PDF size without losing quality.
  • Use clear file names. Name the merged file something that says what it is, because the downloaded name may be generic.
  • Check protected files. A PDF with a password cannot be read in the browser. Remove the password first, if you know it, with Unlock PDF.

Common problems

One of my files will not add. It may be password-protected or damaged. The tool shows a message that names the file. Unlock it or get a fresh copy, then add it again.

The pages are in the wrong order. Go back and rearrange the list, or fix the finished file with Organize PDF.

The merge is slow. Very large files take longer, especially on an older PC. Close other tabs and be patient, or merge in two smaller steps.

The page sizes differ. The merged PDF keeps each page at its own size. That is normal when you combine A4 pages with other sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Does Windows have a built-in way to merge PDFs?

Not as a simple option in File Explorer. Some programs you may already have can do it, but a browser tool is quicker if you only need it now and then.

Is merging PDFs here free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The files are merged inside your browser on your own PC. They are never sent to our servers or anyone else.

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

There is no fixed limit. The real limit is your PC’s memory, so very large files may be slow.

Will the merged PDF open on any computer?

Yes. It is a standard PDF and opens in any PDF reader, including the one in your browser.

Try it now

Join two or more PDFs into a single file. Drag or use the arrows to set the order. Your files never leave your device.
