How to Make a Passport Size Photo on Your Phone

· 6 min read

Make a passport or visa photo on your phone: pick the size, line up your face with a guide, set the file size and print many copies on one sheet.

Free tool for this guide Passport Photo Maker → Passport and visa photos with a face guide and print sheets.

To make a passport size photo on your phone, open the Passport Photo Maker, choose a photo and the size for your application, line up your face with the guide, and tap Make the passport photo. You get the photo at 300 DPI and print sheets with many copies.

The tool works in your browser, so your photo is not uploaded. It cannot promise that an office will accept the photo, so read the official rules for your application first. This guide shows how to do it and what to check.

What you need

  • A clear photo of your face on your phone. Better: a new photo taken as described below.
  • The official photo rules of the office you are applying to. Look for the size, the background, the file type and the largest file size.
  • A few minutes

Steps to make a passport size photo

  1. Open the Passport Photo Maker, tap the box and choose your photo.
  2. Under Photo for, choose the size for your application. Read the line under it, because it says what the size is based on. If your form asks for something else, choose Custom size and type the width and height in millimetres or pixels.
  3. Drag the photo inside the frame, and use Size of the photo in the frame to make your head bigger or smaller. Put the top of your head between the two top green lines and your chin between the two bottom green lines. The red line is only a rough guide to where the eyes are.
  4. Use Straighten if the photo is tilted, and Brightness and Contrast if the face is dark or flat. Check that the face is centred and nothing is cut off.
  5. If the form has a file size limit, type it under Largest file size in KB. Choose which print sheets you want: 4 × 6 inch and A4 are ticked to begin with.
  6. Tap Make the passport photo. Download the photo, and the sheet JPG or PDF files. Open the photo and compare it with the official rules once more before you upload it.

Check the rules first

Every country and office has its own rules, and they change. The tool lists sizes for India passport and visa, UAE, US passport and visa, UK passport and Schengen visa, and it says where each came from and whether the figure is official or only a common size.

Some examples of what the official pages say, as we read them on 19 October 2026:

  • India passport: a colour photo of 630 × 810 pixels on a white background, with the face taking up 80 to 85 percent of the photo, not changed by software.
  • US passport: a square photo of 2 × 2 inches with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches from chin to top of head.
  • UK passport: printed photos 35 × 45 mm with the head 29 to 34 mm, and a digital photo of at least 600 × 750 pixels.

These can change, so use them only as a starting point. The UAE visa size and the Schengen 35 × 45 mm size are common sizes. We did not find them written in an official document, so ask the centre or consulate.

Take a better photo first

The tool cannot fix a bad photo. If you can, take a new one:

  • Stand in front of a plain, light wall, in even daylight, with no shadow on your face or the wall behind you.
  • Face the camera straight on, with a neutral look, mouth closed and eyes open.
  • Have someone hold the phone at eye height, about 1.5 metres away. Do not take a selfie at arm’s length, because it distorts the face.
  • Do not use filters or beauty modes.
  • Leave hair off your eyes, and avoid glasses if you can, because they cause glare.

About changing the background

You can make the background white, light blue or a colour you choose. The tool downloads a small AI model for this the first time, and it shows the size before it starts. It then runs on your device.

But some offices say the photo must not be changed with computer software. India’s passport notice and the UK’s printed photo rules say so. If your office does, do not change the background. Take the photo in front of a plain wall instead.

Printing the sheets

The sheets hold as many copies as fit, with a small gap and thin cut lines. For 35 × 45 mm photos that is 8 copies on a 4 × 6 inch sheet and 30 on A4.

  • Print at 100 percent. Choose “actual size” and turn off “fit to page”, so the photos keep their real size.
  • Print on photo paper if the office asks for printed photos. Some offices say that photos printed at home are often not clear enough, for example GOV.UK for passport photos, so check before you print at home.
  • Cut along the thin lines with a ruler and a sharp blade or scissors.
  • Measure one printed photo with a ruler to check that it is the right size.

Common problems

The site says the file is too big. Type its limit in the file size box and make the photo again. If the tool says it cannot reach the limit, use a plainer photo or ask what other size is allowed.

The site says the file is too small. Some rules also ask for a smallest size. Use a sharper photo with more detail.

My head does not fit between the lines. Move closer to the camera when you take the photo. If the head is too small in the original, making it bigger in the frame will make the photo soft.

The photo is sideways. Use Turn left or Turn right.

Frequently asked questions

Will my photo be accepted?

The tool cannot promise that. It gives you the size, the shape and a guide for the head size based on the rules we found. Offices change rules and add their own, so always compare your photo with the official rules.

Where do the sizes come from?

Each choice names its source, for example the notice about Global Passport Seva for India and the GOV.UK pages for the UK, and says when a size is only a common size. We read them on 19 October 2026.

Can I make the file smaller than 100 KB?

Yes. Type the limit in KB. The tool lowers the picture quality only as far as needed, and keeps the pixel size. If the limit is too small for the pixel size, it says so.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser on your device. If you change the background, a small AI model is downloaded to your device once, and your photo still stays on it.

Try it now

Crop your photo to a passport or visa size with a face guide, set the file size, and save a print sheet with many copies. Check the official rules for your application first. Your files never leave your device.
