How to Remove Sound from a Video

· 4 min read

Mute a video on your phone in seconds, without changing the picture. Free, private, and it works even for videos your browser cannot play.

Free tool for this guide Mute Video → Remove the sound from a video, quickly.

To remove the sound from a video, open the Mute Video tool, choose the video and tap Remove the sound. The tool copies the picture into a new file and leaves the sound track out, so it takes seconds and the picture quality does not change at all.

The video stays on your device the whole time. This guide explains what happens to the file, which videos work, and when to use another tool instead.

What you need

  • A video on your phone or computer, in MP4, MOV, M4V, 3GP or WebM format.
  • A modern browser. Mute Video needs fewer browser features than the other video tools, because it does not decode the picture.

Steps to remove the sound from a video

  1. Open the Mute Video tool, tap the box and choose your video.
  2. Read the line under the box. It tells you whether the video has sound and how big the new file will be. If the video has no sound already, the page says so.
  3. Tap Remove the sound. A bar shows the progress, and a Cancel button stops it.
  4. When it is finished, download the new file, or use the share buttons to send it.
  5. Play the new video once to check that it is silent.

Why the quality does not change

Most video tools re-encode the picture. That means decoding every frame and compressing it again, which takes time and always loses a little detail. Mute Video does not do that. A video file is a container that holds a picture track and a sound track. The tool copies the picture track into a new container exactly as it is, and does not copy the sound track. The picture is byte for byte the same.

That is also why it is fast. The time depends mostly on how quickly your phone can read and write the file.

What stays the same

  • The length. The new video is as long as the old one.
  • The turn. A video filmed upright stays upright, because the setting that says how to turn the picture is kept.
  • The format family. MP4, MOV, M4V and 3GP files come out as MP4. WebM stays WebM.

Videos your browser cannot play

Because the picture is not decoded, Mute Video can often handle videos that your browser cannot play. Some iPhone videos use HEVC, which some Android browsers cannot decode. They can still be muted here, and the result plays on devices that can play HEVC.

Some picture formats cannot be written into an MP4 or WebM file by this tool. It then tells you which format is the problem.

When to use another tool

Common problems

It says the video has no sound. Then there is nothing to remove. Some screen recordings and camera clips have no sound track.

The new file is not much smaller. Sound is a small part of most videos. The picture is the big part and is copied as it is.

It says it cannot write this kind of picture. The picture format is not one this tool can put in an MP4 or WebM file. Try another tool or format.

It says the index of the video is missing. The video file may still be recording or copying, or it may be damaged. Wait until it finishes, or try again with a complete file.

The video is very big. The page warns above 500 MB or 10 minutes. The new file is built in memory, so on a phone a computer is safer for very big files.
