Free tool for this guide Video to MP3 → Save the sound of a video as MP3 or M4A.To convert a video to MP3 on your phone, open the Video to MP3 tool, choose the video, keep MP3 selected, pick a quality and tap Make the audio file. You download an audio file with only the sound of the video.
Everything happens in your browser, so the video is not uploaded. This guide explains MP3 and M4A, the quality choices, how to take just a part of the sound, and what to do when a video has no sound.
What you need
- A video on your phone, in your gallery or files. MP4, MOV from an iPhone, M4V, 3GP and WebM work.
- A recent browser: Chrome, Edge or Samsung Internet on Android, or Safari on a recent iPhone.
- The right to use the sound. Music and speech in videos often belong to someone else.
Steps to convert a video to MP3
- Open the Video to MP3 tool, tap the box and choose your video. If the video has no sound, the page says so straight away.
- Under File type, keep MP3, or choose M4A (AAC).
- Under Quality, choose 128, 192 or 320 kbps. 192 is a good choice for most videos.
- To keep only a part of the sound, type a Start and an End, such as 0:30 and 1:45. Leave both empty to take it all.
- Check the line under the boxes. It shows how long the sound is and about how big the file will be.
- Tap Make the audio file. A bar shows the progress, and a Cancel button stops it.
- Download the file, or use the share buttons to send it. Play it once to check it.
MP3 or M4A?
MP3 is the format that plays everywhere: old phones, car stereos, speakers and almost every app. Choose it when you are not sure.
M4A holds AAC sound. It is usually a little smaller for the same quality, and it is the fastest to make. Many videos already hold AAC sound. When you choose M4A for such a video, the tool can copy the sound out without changing it, so nothing is lost and it takes seconds. Phones, computers and most music apps play M4A.
How good will it sound?
An MP3 or an AAC file compresses the sound and drops detail that is hard to hear. The tool makes a new MP3 from the sound of the video, which was already compressed once. So an MP3 can sound as good as the video’s sound at best, never better.
- 128 kbps. Small files. Fine for speech, lectures and podcasts.
- 192 kbps. Good for music on a phone. A sensible default.
- 320 kbps. The most detail an MP3 offers, with big files. It helps only if the video sound is of high quality.
Taking a part of the sound
Type times as minutes and seconds (1:23) or just seconds (83.5). The tool decodes only that part. If you need to see the video to find the moment, use Trim Video first, or play the video in your gallery and note the times.
When the video has no sound
Screen recordings, some camera clips and videos saved without sound have no sound track. The tool tells you when you choose the file, because there is nothing to take out. Choose a video that plays sound.
Common problems
It says my browser can’t process video. Update Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet or Safari, or try another browser. Older browsers lack the features the tool uses to read the sound.
It says the sound uses a format this browser cannot read. Some videos use rare sound formats such as Dolby Digital. Try another browser, or a computer.
The MP3 encoder could not start. The MP3 maker is a small separate file that your browser downloads the first time. Check your connection once, or choose M4A, which needs no extra file.
The file is silent or too quiet. The video may have been quiet. Check the video in your gallery.
It is slow. A long video takes longer. Keep the tab open and the screen on, or use a computer.
Frequently asked questions
Is the video uploaded?
No. The sound is taken out and encoded inside your browser. The video never goes to our servers or anyone else.
Can I choose a bitrate above 320 kbps?
No. 320 kbps is the highest rate MP3 uses. If you want the original sound untouched, choose M4A and keep the original sound when the video has AAC sound.
Why is my MP3 not exactly the length of the video?
MP3 files are made of small blocks, so the length can differ by a fraction of a second. If you typed a start and an end, you get that part.
Can I make a ringtone this way?
You can take a short part of the sound as an MP3 or M4A. How to set it as a ringtone depends on your phone, and some phones only accept certain formats and lengths.
Does it work offline?
After the first use the page, its video engine and the MP3 maker are saved by your browser, so it can work without a connection.
