Free tool for this guide Resize PDF Pages → Change PDF pages to A4, Letter, Legal or a custom size.To resize a PDF to A4, open the Resize PDF Pages tool, choose your file, keep A4 as the page size, check the preview and tap Resize the pages. Every page is placed on a new A4 sheet, and the text stays sharp.
The same steps work for Letter, Legal, A3, A5 or a size you type. This guide explains how to choose between fit and fill, what the margin does, and what to do with pages that are wide.
What you need
- The PDF on your phone or computer
- The page size you need. If an office asks for A4 or Letter, use that. If you only know it in millimetres or inches, use Custom size.
- About a minute
Steps to resize a PDF to A4
- Open the Resize PDF Pages tool, tap the box and choose your PDF. The file stays on your device.
- Under New page size, keep A4. Choose Letter, Legal, A3 or A5 if you need another size, or Custom size to type a width and a height.
- Under Page direction, keep Match each page so wide pages get a wide sheet and tall pages a tall one. Choose Portrait or Landscape to give every page the same direction.
- Under What to do with the old page, keep Fit the whole page if nothing may be cut off. The preview shows the result.
- Add a Margin if you need empty space around the page, for printing or binding.
- Look at the preview. Use Previous and Next to check other pages. The line under it says the old size, the new size, and how much the page was enlarged or reduced.
- Tap Resize the pages and download the new PDF. The name ends with the size, for example report-A4.pdf.
Fit, fill or keep the size?
- Fit the whole page. The old page is made as large as it can be without cutting anything off. If its shape is different from A4, empty space is left on two sides. This is the safe choice for documents, forms and anything with text near the edge.
- Fill the sheet. The old page covers the whole sheet. Whatever does not fit is cut off at the edge, so use it for photos and posters, not for pages with text near the border.
- Keep the size. The page is not scaled. It is centred on the sheet. A smaller page gets a wide white border, and a bigger page is cut off. The preview warns you when that happens.
The page is never stretched, so letters do not get squashed or tall.
The text stays sharp
The tool does not turn pages into pictures. Each old page is placed on the new sheet as a drawing of itself. Text stays real text and lines stay sharp at any zoom. You can still select, copy and search the words.
Three things are not carried over: clickable links, fillable form fields, and comments or bookmarks. If you need a form filled in, fill it with Fill PDF Form before you resize it, and keep the original file as well.
Margins and white edges
A margin keeps the page away from the edge of the sheet on all four sides. A printer cannot print right to the edge, so a margin of 5 to 10 mm is common for pages you will print. The dashed line in the preview shows the area inside the margin.
If the old PDF has wide white borders of its own, the page looks small on the new sheet. Cut the borders away first with Crop PDF, then resize the result. Our guide on cropping a PDF to remove margins shows how.
Pages that are turned or have different sizes
A PDF can mix sizes: a letter page, a wide chart and a photo page. Every page is resized on its own, so the whole file comes out in one size. Pages that were stored turned, such as a scan that was saved sideways, are shown as they appear on screen, and the output has no hidden turn. If a page is on its side, turn it first with Rotate PDF.
If the new file is large
Placing pages does not change the pictures inside them. A PDF with big photos stays big. Run the result through Compress PDF if a form limits the size. Our guide on reducing PDF size without losing quality shows how.
Common problems
The page looks small on the sheet. The old page has wide white edges, or you chose a much bigger size. Crop it first, or choose Fill.
The edges are cut off. You chose Fill or Keep the size. Choose Fit the whole page.
Landscape pages are tiny on a portrait sheet. Choose Match each page or Landscape.
A link or form field stopped working. They are not carried over. Keep the original for those.
The PDF will not open. A password-protected PDF cannot be read in the browser. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text still sharp after resizing?
Yes. The pages are not turned into pictures. Text stays text and lines stay sharp, and you can still select and search the words.
Which size should I choose, A4 or Letter?
The one your office or printer asks for. A4 is the standard in India and most of the world. Letter is the standard in the United States and Canada.
Can I resize only some pages?
Not yet. All pages are resized together. To change only some, split the PDF with Split PDF, resize the part, and merge the parts again with Merge PDF.
Does resizing make the file smaller?
Not by itself. The pictures inside the pages stay as they are. Use Compress PDF for a smaller file.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is resized inside your browser, on your device. It never goes to our servers or anyone else.
